Since 29th March 2017 we have continually heard or spoken about Brexit; whether you have watch the latest news update was drinking your morning coffee, or you’ve had lengthy debates with colleagues Brexit has become the norm, and it’s easy to become complacent about the potential implications on your business… but the reality is Brexit is looming and there are many things to consider:

  • What are the effects on our customers?
  • What are the effects on our suppliers?
  • What are the effects on our workforce?
  • What are the financial implications for our business?

The answers to these questions vary greatly for all businesses, the one question we can answer is how we can prepare for changes to our workforce?

Answer = Workforce planning

Although there are undoubtedly uncertain times ahead, there is also an opportunity for businesses to use their initiative and make workforce planning a priority on their agenda to ensure they have the resources available to ride out the changes ahead of us. Not only does this office stability to the organisation; it also gives existing employees peace of mind knowing their employer is proactively seeking to reduce the impact on the business and its people, which makes for a happy team.

A solution to recruitment?

Most employers will have heard of apprenticeships and how they combine practical training in a job with dedicated study times.

The increased difficulties in recruiting the experience employers require has led employers to take a fresh look at apprenticeship schemes.

In addition, the relaxation of the eligibility criteria has encouraged more individuals to look at apprenticeships as a way to start or change their career.

Who is eligible?

  • Apprentices need to be 16 years or over
  • Have the right to work in England
  • Spend at least 50% of their working hours in England
  • Work for you, a connected company or connected charity as defined by HMRC
  • Not be in full-time education

Note graduates and over 25‘s can now join apprenticeship schemes.

75% of employees reported that productivity in their workplace had improved all that apprenticeships improved the quality of the product or service.

Why recruit apprentices?

Apprentices are usually keen to learn and want to prove themselves. Because they know you are investing in them, they often reward employees with loyalty and enthusiasm.

They can bring fresh ideas and can help keep a business up-to-date and relevant, especially when it comes to digital skills. Employers can ensure that the training reflects step particulars needs and addresses skills shortages.

Financially, employers benefit because they can pay a more affordable apprentice rate of minimum wage and they may not have to pay class one national insurance contributions on earnings up to £827 per week for employees age under 25 completing a statutory apprenticeship.

There is also an apprenticeship grant for employers that is worth £1500 per apprentice. Find out if you could be eligible on the government’s website.

Apprenticeship levy

Companies with an annual payroll of £3 million are required to contribute to the levy (less than 2% of businesses). 

Non-levy paying employers share (10%) the cost of training and assessing their apprentices with the government.
